Gunshots Ring Out as Aid Convoy Attempts to Cross Venezuelan Border Near Urena

Venezuelan civilians clashed with riot police at the Colombian border in Cucuta on Saturday, February 23, as they attempted to force an opening for a convoy carrying humanitarian aid to cross into Venezuela.

This video, streamed from a bridge separating Cucuta, Colombia, and Ureña, Venezuela, shows crowds chanting and waving Venezuelan flags as trucks carrying aid slowly push towards the border. Shouts of “Si se puede!” (“Yes we can!”) and the blaring of truck horns can be heard throughout the footage until the crack of gunshots sparks panic. Civilians are seen clashing with police bearing riot shields as the shots ring out.

Similar clashes erupted Friday and Saturday after Juan Guaidó, the country’s opposition leader and self-declared interim president, called for nationwide rallies. On Friday, a confrontation broke out near Tunel La Cabreba in Aragua, Venezuela, after the military sought to prevent trucks from driving to the border to receive aid shipments.
