Monsoon season storms hit Glendale, Arizona, and nearby cities on Monday, July 22, downing trees and leaving thousands of people without power, local media reported.

Ktar reported that the storms left more than 14,000 customers without power around 8.30 pm on Monday night. The number dropped to about 540 customers without power on Tuesday, the report said.

Monsoons are caused by shifting wind patterns and can bring strong winds and heavy rain, the National Weather Service (NWS) said. They are known to affect Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and neighboring states.

The NWS said monsoon season could also cause possible dust storms, and issued a dust storm warning for the area on Monday night. Credit: William Thornton via Storyful
