The Mount Nyiragongo volcano, located north of Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, erupted on May 22, sparking panic among the city’s residents who recalled damage wrought by the volcano’s last eruption in 2002.

This video filmed by Samuel Kerosi shows dense plumes billowing and lava spilling out of the volcano.

Local volcanologist Dario Tedesco said Goma did not appear to be in danger, Reuters reported.

The last eruption, in January 2002, destroyed dozens of homes, killed hundreds of people, and displaced 120,000 Goma residents after the lava flowed into the city. Credit: Samuel Kerosi via Storyful
