At least eight people died in severe flooding in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, Governor Stefano Bonaccini told local media on Wednesday, May 17. Some people remained missing, the governor said.

Torrential rain caused severe flooding and landslides, with 3B Meteo reporting that over two months’ worth of rain fell in the space of 48 hours.

Bonaccini said thousands had been evacuated from their homes, including 3,000 in Bologna, 5,000 in Faenza and 5,000 in the province of Ravenna.
