A long line of people was seen at a gun store in San Bruno in California on March 16 amid a reported surge in firearm purchases during the global coronavirus outbreak.

There were reports of an increase in gun purchases across the United States as the pandemic worsened.

“Definitely wasn’t expecting people to be purchasing guns of all things during this time. It’s very disheartening,” Twitter user allthisdamage, who filmed this video, told Storyful.

The spike in firearm sales was coupled with panic-buying in supermarkets. Some stores have moved to restrict the number of certain items, such as hand sanitiser, that can be sold at one time.

There were 3,487 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the United States on March 16, according to the Centre for Disease Control. At least 68 deaths had been linked to the virus. Credit: allthisdamage via Storyful
