Smoke from wildfires in Canada returned to New York City on Thursday, June 29, leading to hazy skies and a drop in air quality, though not to the same levels seen a few weeks earlier when dense smoke shrouded the city in an yellow-orange hue.

The National Weather Service issued an air quality alert for all of New York and New Jersey and encouraged sensitive people, such as those with heart or lung conditions, to “limit strenuous activities and their time outdoors.”

The wildfire smoke was having a worse impact on other North American cities, such as Toronto, Detroit, and Washington, DC, which on Thursday ranked among the five major cities in the world with the worst air quality. Credit: Rob McDonagh via Storyful
