The aerial footage shot at Merzouga near Rachidia, in southeastern Morocco reveals the extent of flooding triggered by the downpours.

In a social media post, Morocco's General Directorate of Meteorology said the country experienced a particularly unstable and humid month of September which was marked by intense downpour.

Some regions experienced heavy rains exceeding 200 mm in 48 hours, resulting in flash floods, the directorate added.

A recent OCHA report said over the last few months, heavy rains killed more than 1,460 people in the countries on the fringes of the Sahara. While such extreme events are rare, they may become increasingly frequent due to the effects of climate change.
