Astronaut Buzz Aldrin's flight jacket heading to auction

STORY: Pieces of Apollo 11 history

are heading to auction

This is an in-flight jacket worn by

Buzz Aldrin on the 1969 mission

CASSANDRA HATTON, SOTHEBY’S GLOBAL HEAD OF SCIENCE & POPULAR CULTURE:

“This is an incredibly rare thing. If you go to the website of the Smithsonian, you will see that Neil Armstrong's complete in-flight coverall garment is there. So his jacket, trousers and boots. Michael Collins’ jacket, trousers and boots are at the Smithsonian. They have Buzz's trousers and boots, but not the jacket. So that makes this the only flown garment from the Apollo 11 mission that is available to be purchased.”

It’s part of Aldrin’s personal collection

being auctioned off by Sotheby’s New York

Another top lot is a pen the crew used

to repair a broken circuit breaker switch

It saved their lives

Each item could fetch

as much as $2 mln
