Forecasters Confirm At Least 55 Tornadoes Across Eastern US Over 24-Hour Period

The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed a total of at least 55 tornadoes touched down on multiple states in the eastern US following severe storms in the region between April 2 and 3.

According to the NWS, survey crews confirmed the tornadoes touched down in the states of Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Alabama, West Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia and Florida.

In West Virginia, forecasters said a record-breaking 8 tornadoes touched down in the state on April 2, beating the previous record of 6.

The outbreak was compared to the ‘Super Outbreak’ of 1974, when storms produced 148 tornadoes over the region, with 30 of those tornadoes classified as F-4 or F-5.
