Wolf volcano erupts on Ecuador's Isabela Island

After seven years of relative inactivity, the volcano erupted last Thursday (January 6) at midnight causing smoke and ash clouds to rise up to 3,800 metres (12,000 feet).

Lava flowing from the volcano has covered about 15 kilometres and is moving through the path of past eruptions, said the Ecuadorean Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition on Tuesday (January 11).

Ecuador's environment minister Gustavo Manrique visited the site three days after the eruption and said the lava was less than five kilometres (3.1 miles) from the coast and flowing far from where wildlife species are primarily located.
