The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released timelapse footage recorded by the GOESEast satellite showing the evolution of Hurricane Sam from September 23-28.

Sam was first classified as a tropical storm on September 23, later strengthening into a hurricane.

By September 28, Sam had strengthened to a category 4 hurricane. The National Hurricane Center said that large swells generated by Sam were expected to hit the Caribbean by Thursday or Friday. Significant swells were likely along the US East Coast by the weekend. These could lead to “life-threatening surf” and dangerous rip currents, the center said. Credit: NOAA Satellites via Storyful
