'Tragic Night': Primary School in Argentinian Resort Town Burns Down

An Argentinian resort lost its only primary school to fire on June 23, with a local woman describing it as a “tragic night for our town”.

A local radio station said snowy conditions hampered the firefighting response to the school, in the lakeside town of Caviahue.

Footage by local Ivanna Olivares shows the fire burning as she and others look on.

“A tragic night for our town. A fire that could have been avoided. A fire that could have taken many lives,” Olivares wrote.

“It is difficult to express all the emotions that surround this sad event. Desolation, despair, disbelief, and incomprehension invade us at this time,” the local educational authority said.
