The young of the rare pink land iguana have been found on the slopes of Wolf Volcano in the Galapagos for the first time, according to the Directorate of Galapagos National Park.

An announcement from the park said the species, which was first spotted in 1986 and only classified officially in 2009 , is considered critically endangered. Approximately 200 adults remain, all of which are confined to Wolf Volcano on Isabela Island, making them especially vulnerable.

“This discovery marks a significant step forward, which allows us to identify a path going forward to save the pink iguana,” the director of the Galapagos National Park, Danny Rueda, said in a statement.
